UK Disability History Month 2025: How Workplaces Can Support Inclusion and Accessibility
Support UK Disability History Month 2025
20th November to 20th December
UK Disability History Month takes place every year from 20th November to 20th December and provides time to reflect on the history of disabled people’s fight for equality and human rights in the UK. It encourages us to recognise progress, challenge barriers, and take action to improve inclusion in the present.
As one of the UK’s first consultancies focusing on accessible marketing and neurodiversity, Tania Gerard Digital supports companies to mark UKDHM with meaningful learning experiences that lead to real change.
What is UK Disability History Month?
UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) was first recognised in 2010. The month creates space to learn about the history of disabled people’s rights, the campaigns that influenced change, and the experiences that continue to shape equality today.
It also encourages workplaces to reflect on their current culture, policies, and behaviours, and identify where positive changes can be made to ensure disabled people can thrive.
UKDHM promotes the Social Model of Disability, which focuses on removing barriers in society, systems, design, language, and attitudes, rather than placing the burden on the individual.
Why This Month Matters
Although progress has been made, disabled people in the UK continue to face inequality. Government data shows that in 2025, the employment rate for disabled people was 52.8%, compared to 82.5% for non-disabled people. That gap remains significant.
Disabled employees also report higher levels of discrimination, bullying, and unfair treatment at work. UKDHM provides an ideal opportunity to take practical steps to create more inclusive workplaces.
By raising awareness, hosting conversations, and embedding lasting change, companies can help close the disability employment gap and build cultures that value disabled talent.
Theme for 2025
Each year has a theme that guides reflection and events. The theme for 2025 is:
“Disability, Life and Death”
This theme considers the realities disabled people face across their whole lives, including how barriers, inequalities, and lack of access can affect wellbeing, care, and quality of life. It is a sensitive and important theme that encourages education, empathy, and action.
